WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HPV

Did you know...
FACT: HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is listed as the most common sexually-transmitted infection in the United States.
FACT: At least 50 percent of sexually active men and women acquire genital HPV infection at some point in their lives.
FACT: By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired genital HPV infection.
FACT: HPV causes 70% of cervical cancer and 90% of genital warts.

BUT...
There is a vaccine that is offered at Vaden Health Center!

  • The vaccine, Gardasil®, protects against four HPV types, which together cause 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. There is no infectious material in this vaccine, so you cannot get HPV from it.
  • The FDA has licensed the HPV vaccine as safe and effective. It has been tested in over 11,000 females (ages 9-26 years) around the world. These studies have shown no serious side effects. The most common side effect is soreness at the injection site.

About the Vaccine: Information for Stanford Students

  • The vaccine is a 3 shot process. Women, ages 9-26, should get the first shot as soon as possible. The second shot is received 2 months after the first, and the third shot is received 4 months after the second.
  • At Vaden each shot is $135 (for a total of $405), and payment is due at the time of the injection.   This is expensive, but WORTH IT.
  • Some large insurance plans may cover the vaccine, but others do not. Contact your insurance company to find out.
  • You may benefit from the vaccine if you already have HPV because most people are not infected with all four types of HPV contained in the vaccine.   In clinical trials, individuals with current or past infection with one or more vaccine-related HPV types prior to vaccination were protected from disease caused by the remaining HPV types.
  • It is important to note that 30% of cervical cancers will not be prevented   by the vaccine.
  • Remember, it is important for women to get a Pap Smear every year with or without the HPV vaccine!
